The Magnolia Concert Series at Flat Rock Cinema welcomes award-winning South Carolina folk act Admiral Radio on Wednesday, December 3rd.
ABOUT ADMIRAL RADIO:Admiral Radio, the award-winning folk/Americana act from South Carolina, is the creative partnership of Coty Hoover and Becca Smith. Named after their old wooden radio, this husband-and-wife team blends heartfelt harmonies, storytelling, and raw sincerity. Having met while waiting tables in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, their sound is straightforward yet powerful—rooted in tight vocal interplay and finely picked acoustic instruments. Inspired by the everyday, their songs explore life lessons, the quiet hustle of ordinary life, and the dogged optimism that drives it all.
Simply put, Becca and Coty aim to leave listeners better than they found them. The duo has five independently produced albums under their belt, including Good Things Take Time (2024) which has garnered critical acclaim and national radio play for tracks like "Look Back and Learn" praised by American Songwriter for its 'power to help and heal', and EP Consider Me a Lighthouse (2025) which includes songs written over the span of 6 years with a lot of buzz surrounding tracks like “Cotton Candy Sky” and “Song for Me”. For their next full-length album, the group has officially signed on with Too Fine Records, a new label out of Nashville created by longtime managers of artists like Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors, Ellie Holcomb, Judah & the Lion, and more. The project is set to begin releasing in 2026.
Known for their energetic and emotional live shows, Admiral Radio has shared stages with bluegrass legend Del McCoury, folkgrass icon Molly Tuttle, pop-rock sensation Judah & the Lion, and more. They have also earned finalist and first-place honors in prestigious songwriting competitions around the country, including Kerrville NewFolk, the MerleFest Band Competition, Cayamo Soundcheck, and the International Bluegrass Music Association's Official Songwriter Showcase. From humble beginnings to their growing buzz, Admiral Radio is redefining the folk tradition with every mile down America's backroads.

“Fast-paced, high-energy foot stompers. Ballads that’ll make you cry. It’s kind of like a rock band married old-fashioned bluegrass and had a little baby. And named it TopHouse.”

Last year, the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band performed the Greenville premiere of the complete original score of the Duke Ellington re-creation of the Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite. Since then one of our most asked questions has been “Are you all doing the Nutcracker again this year”?
Great news…last year’s premiere is becoming this year’s holiday tradition! Make it yours!
In 1960 Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn arranged 9 of the original Tchaikovsky dances from his Nutcracker Suite for his big band. But when Duke Ellington wrote for his band, he wrote every note with specific musicians (some of the greatest jazz musicians ever) in mind.
This places unusual demands on all the musicians in a band seeking to perform his Nutcracker Suite. It’s not enough to just read the notes on the 3rd trumpet or lead alto part - each musician needs to create an interpretation that Duke might have expected from his great musicians like Ray Nance or Johnny Hodges. That’s why this important work is rarely heard live and complete in its original score…it demands much from even the best of musicians!
The musicians of the Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band are stepping up to play the Ellington Nutcracker again this year. And they will play a few other pieces of jazz holiday music as the perfect wrapper for this suite! So it will definitely be a swinging, toe-tapping evening.
You’ll hear familiar melodies in a new way…even with new titles to match the imaginative twist put on them (can you guess what “Sugar Rum Cherry” is based on?). Fanfares, tambourines, a bamboo whistle, and a hard-swinging rhythm section all make their appearances in this dreamworld “melting pot of musical styles past and present” (NY Times). Truly, his 1960 Christmas gift for the ages!
Poe Mill Music is a performance venue (and recording studio) just over a mile northwest of downtown Greenville off of Pete Hollis (SC=183). (You’ve probably driven by it…but never noticed it). Poe Mill is accessible (no steps) and offers plenty of onsite parking.
Admission is $30.00 through Eventbrite, or at the door until tickets are sold out (Poe Mill is smaller than last year’s venue, so the seats may go fast!)

Join us at Dreaming Stone Arts and Ecology Center on November 15th for the third concert in our series, “TheMusic That Reconnects” with “Émigré” This event is a continuation of our fall and winterconcert series that will feature fantastically talented musicians and educators who draw from varied musicaltraditions to connect us more deeply with ourselves, each other, and the world.
This special holiday show will feature Celtic folk songs, tunes & ballads alongside a Christmas-themed selection from Appalachia to Scotland
Émigré will perform a variety of music tracing the diaspora of the Irish and Scots across the ocean to North America. Their repertoire will include ballads and fiddle tunes from Great Britain and Ireland, as well as songs from the French-speaking regions of Canada, and melodies familiar in both Appalachia and the North Atlantic. The band’s name originates from the dispersal of peoples, ideas, and music that resulted from centuries of emigration from Ireland and Scotland, as well as from the unique music that emerged when these were combined with others from a world away. The sound of Émigré is characterized by rich vocal melodies in Scots Gaelic, French, and English, dynamic fiddle playing, and driving guitar accompaniment.
This event will be held at Dreaming Stone Arts & Ecology Center on December 13 th, 2025 @ 7:00 pm. (Doorsopen at 6:00 pm). Seats are limited, so we kindly request that you purchase your tickets in advance. The entrance fee is on a sliding scale. Drinks will be available for purchase.
