Jul 18 Friday
The Penland Gallery presents a reception for the exhibition titled Vivian Chiu: Family Dinner, on Friday, July 18 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM with an artist talk at 4:30 PM.
The pieces in the exhibition are vessel forms made from pine crate wood. The artist received a gift of wooden shipping crates from Wing On Wo and Co, the oldest continuously operated storefront in Manhattan’s Chinatown. She dismantled them, cut them into hundreds of carefully calculated pieces, and then reassembled them into vessel forms that echo the porcelain wares that were shipped in the crates. Some of the pieces incorporate marquetry to create narrative imagery evoking stories of Chiu’s childhood in Hong Kong.
The pieces are beautiful and evocative, the technical complexity and execution are remarkable, and it all adds up to breathtaking exhibition.

Join us for an in-depth exploration of the natural community types found on Grandfather Mountain. In this class, you'll learn to recognize distinct habitats by studying their characteristic flora, fauna, and environmental conditions. Guided by ecological principles and scientific tools, we’ll examine how factors such as elevation, topography, soil composition and microclimates shape these unique ecosystems and provide habitat for some of the rare and endangered species that we'll see during our exploration. This workshop will enhance your ability to classify habitats and deepen your understanding of the complex interplay between species and their environments. This event costs $60 for general admission and $51 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. Registration opens on this page on May 20, at 10 a.m. Limited to 20 participants.
