The first time Balsam Range won the International Bluegrass Music Association award for Entertainer Of The Year back in 2014, bassist Tim Surrett recalled how someone came up to the band and asked, “How's it feel to be the best bluegrass band in the world?” It was a question they were not quite ready for, as Tim went on to say, “all of us just started laughing.

The mandolinist for Balsam Range released a wonderful solo release this year called "Fret a Spell" (get it?), and he stops by for a visit with Jasmin Melton before Balsam Range plays the Cherry Bounce Festival in Forest City, NC  Friday night. Darren's own band, which draws from a variety of styles, plays Bearwaters Brewing in Canton, NC on Saturday, as well as the Folkmoot Center in Waynesville, NC on Sunday the 23rd.
