Staff Writer at The Smoky Mountain News Cory Vaillancourt shared details about his recent stories regarding Haywood County and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's first phase of reopening the state and some of its businesses while dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic. The mandolinist for Balsam Range released a wonderful solo release this year called "Fret a Spell" (get it?), and he stops by for a visit with Jasmin Melton before Balsam Range plays the Cherry Bounce Festival in Forest City, NC  Friday night. Darren's own band, which draws from a variety of styles, plays Bearwaters Brewing in Canton, NC on Saturday, as well as the Folkmoot Center in Waynesville, NC on Sunday the 23rd.

In early June this year, our Program Director Joe Kendrick attended the Cold Mountain Music Festival at the Lake Logan Conference Center in beautiful Canton, NC. He had the opportunity to chat a bit with J.S. Ondara about music and the meaning of Ondara's song “Master O’Connor.” They also talk about the importance of writing one's own music and why the Kenyan/American musician rarely plays covers.  Finally... you'll hear Ondara's observations on American culture.
