Wednesday 4/13: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway – Crooked Tree
This has been one of our most highly anticipated new releases this year, not only for this great new band she’s got backing her up, but guests like Old Crow Medicine Show, Billy Strings, and Gillian Welch. Beautiful songs here, too.
Wednesday 11/24: David James Allen – The Architect
Folk, blues, and alt-country from this Ontario singer/songwriter on his third album, in which he addresses love, music, and politics. “When I write a song, I want it to work on many different levels for different people and I try to get to the core of an emotion that a lot of people have experienced, so they feel less alone. I want to make somebody feel like they are connected and not isolated.”
Tuesday 11/23: Tuesday: Neal Francis – In Plain Sight
Fans of Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, Dr. John, and Leon Russell among others are poised to dig this great sophomore release from keyboardist/singer/rocker Neal Francis. The songs came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a (possibly) haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience.
Wednesday: Kat Edmonson – Christmas Vol. 1: Holiday Swingin’
Check out these inventive jazz reinterpretations of various classics you may – or may not – recognize.
Peak of the Week for 12/9: Heartless Bastards - A Beautiful Life
Singer Erika Wennerstrom has fronted this rock band for six albums now, and this one includes session players from My Morning Jacket, Midlake, and Okkervil River. Her songs on “A Beautiful Life” are yet another much needed first aid kit for dealing with the trials and tribulations of today’s world; themes of self-love and awareness, mental health, the environment, and consumerism thread it together, with tasteful forays into blues, psychedelia, and singer/songwriter.
Tuesday: Norah Jones – I Dream of Christmas
This isn’t exactly Norah’s first Holiday album: she and her trio of friends Puss N’ Boots released “Dear Santa” in 2019. This new one was produced by Leon Michels, and features Brian Blade on drums, Tony Scherr and Nick Movshon on bass, and Russ Pahl on pedal steel guitar among others.
Monday: Amanda Shires – For Christmas
The Texas-raised fiddler/singer/songwriter/rocker, and member of Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit (as well as the frontman’s wife), has her first Holiday album out. And while there’s flying reindeer and fallen tinsel and such, there are also the other experiences that tend to come around this time of year: family drama, forced cheer, and fantasies of escaping off to some far-away tropical island.
Thursday Peak of the Week: Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal
Bob Weir, Marcus King, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Tedeschi/Trucks, and many others cover the songs of the revered jamband and Americana guitarist of Circles Around the Sun, Hard Working Americans, and much more. It’s high time his own songs received more attention, and this 3-CD set of terrific covers helps to do that.
Thursday 10/21 @ 8pm: Sturgill Simpson – The Ballad of Dood & Juanita
Thursday 10/21: Natalie Hemby – Pins & Needles
