Wednesday: The Doohickeys – Merry Happy Whatever
We’ve got holiday tunes from the reverent to the irreverent to spin for you this season. This 5-song EP from the Los Angeles duo of Haley Spence Brown and Jack Hackett and their band is festive, funny, and a little bit naughty…
Monday: Winter’s Grace: A Holiday Benefit Album for Western North Carolina
Introducing a new Holiday compilation out of Asheville! Abby Bryant, the New Dawn Starkestra, Las Sonora Carolina, and others are on this new release out of Citizen Studios. Producer and musician Jeff Sipe teamed up with Gar Ragland, Eddie Dewey, and Josh Blake to create this nine-song holiday collection. Proceeds from the album sales will benefit MusiCares and ArtsAVL in ongoing post-Helene recovery efforts.
Melissa Carper – A Very Carper Christmas
As soon as you hear Melissa Carper sing, you might notice two things: her Nebraska upbringing, which included plenty of good classic country music, and her seamless blend of old-time, bluegrass, western swing, jazz, and blues, which form the foundation of country music itself. She’s made great solo records and collaborations with Kelly Willis and Brennen Leigh in the Wonder Women of Country, and now she’s released a Christmas album!
Thursday at 8pm: Snocaps -- Snocaps
It's the latest project from Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) and her twin sister Allison Crutchfield (Swearin') and the album features MJ Lenderman and Brad Cook. Each of the four artists play a number of instruments, but the spotlight remains squarely with the two sisters, with each writing and taking lead vocals for half the songs. When they sing in harmony, you’ll notice the kind of magic that close sibling singers are able to create. One of the major topics they cover in their songwriting here is that of addiction, which their family has wrestled with over the years.
Thursday 1/8: Jesse Appelman – Where We Go
Where We Go, the debut album from California mandolinist Jesse Appelman, comes out Feb 20, and should be of keen interest to any fans of the acts he’s played with (Laurie Lewis & Kathy Kallick, Sam Grisman Project), as well as Andrew Marlin/Watchhouse, The Onlies, and Crooked Still, among others. John Mailander produced it, and the core band is Eli West (guitar), Sami Braman (fiddle), and Emily Mann (bass). Guests include AJ Lee, Allison de Groot, Laurie Lewis, and Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms.
Wednesday 1/7: Mike Mattison – Turn a Midnight Corner
Mike Mattison is best known as a vocalist in the Tedeschi-Trucks Band and the Derek Trucks Band for over 23 years, though we also recall his cool work with the scrappy group Scrap-o-Matic, too. He has now released his third solo album, which he also produced. The album tells the story of Ted ‘n ‘Turk, a fictional 1930s Blues duo, who are “rediscovered” in the 1970s. It’s an intriguing story that uncovers a lot of the darker sides of the music industry, and Mattison says he’s also working on releasing this concept as a novella someday.
Tuesday 1/6: Tyler Ramsey & Carl Broemel – Celestun
Having been friends and occasional touring partners for well over a decade, Asheville-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Tyler Ramsey and My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel have now made their full-length recorded debut with Celestun (out Jan. 15th). It is predominantly filled with lush, mostly acoustic instrumentals, although they each sing a song or two here as well.
Monday 1/5: New singles from Altin Gun, John Craigie, and Della Mae
Happy New Year! We look forward to a steady flow of great new releases from hundreds of WNCW-aligned acts in 2026. As the new full-length albums start to roll in, we begin this year’s New Tunes at 2 spotlight with some hints of what’s to come. Check out these new singles from forthcoming releases of these three acts, showcasing the eclecticism and talent we love featuring here at “A World of Music.”
Thursday at 8pm: Mavis Staples – Sad and Beautiful World
On her new, 14th record, Mavis stands side by side with us in the face of dangers she knows all too well, at a time when more and more people have reason to wonder who and what could be lost. Produced by Brad Cook, it spans seven decades of the American songbook — a range nearly as vast as Mavis’ career — and includes reinventions of timeless songs as well as original music. It also includes cameos by artists who have become part of Mavis’ world, many of whom are legends in their own right: Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield, MJ Lenderman, Justin Vernon and others shine a light on her while Mavis does what only she can do. Embracing vulnerability, she sings close and deep here, drawing the listener into a circle filled with her unforgettable presence.
Thursday at 8pm: West Texas Exiles – 8000 Days
This Austin band features a triple-threat of songwriters in Marco Gutierrez, Daniel Davis, and Colin Gilmore (son of legendary Texas troubadour Jimmie Dale Gilmore), plus seasoned bassist/producer Eric Harrison and drummer Trinidad Leal. Leal and Gutierrez were formerly in the Texas band Dirty River Boys. The Exiles' 2023 debut EP paved the way for this first full-length album from these five, who collectively hail from El Paso, Lubbock, and Amarillo. "On 8000 Days, the group’s debut album, the country rock sounds of the Flying Burrito Brothers meet the rock anthems of Bruce Springsteen and the bright country pop of the Eagles." (No Depression)
