  • These two members of the Rising Appalachia band, both of whom grew up in Asheville, recorded this album in a rustic cabin in Colorado (named Long Branch.) It’s a wonderful exploration of both both traditional Appalachian and Irish tunes and inventive originality here. Duncan played fiddle, mandocello, guitar, cello; David played guitar, banjo, upright bass. By the way, the album art is by another artist who grew up in Asheville, Hannah Seng. She helped introduce the two to each other years ago, as well as coax Duncan into playing old time fiddle.
  • This is Van Morrison’s first collection of all original music since 2022, with songs that transcend across soul, jazz, blues, folk, and country (including a tribute to another legend known for that, Ray Charles.)
  • As his publicist says, after a decade of being born, Josh Tillman is finally busy dying. Supposedly this is in reference to his time stepping out into the spotlight since his previous life as drummer for Fleet Foxes, and now coming to terms with mortality and finding spiritual contentment. Mahashmashana is Sanskrit for “great cremation ground.” Check out this 6th album of his, which includes Jonathan Wilson, Drew Erickson, Eli Thomson, and others.
  • Check out the follow-up to his 2019 self-titled collection, once again reflecting on universal themes but delivered with a personal touch that makes it seems like he’s having an intimate one-on-one conversation with just you. A British singer-songwriter of Ugandan descent, Michael sings songs of self-discovery and acceptance with strikingly honest delivery, and a wide variety of musical styles woven in.
  • David Lowery and Johnny Hickman wanted to introduce new fans to the band Cracker, but discovered that algorithmic streaming playlists put too much emphasis on just their ‘90s alt-rock hits. As great as those tracks are, there’s so much more to them, as many of us WNCW listeners know! Licensing issues made rereleases of their catalog challenging, so they’ve decided to re-record a lot of songs, and release them along with demos, outtakes, collaborations, and live tracks. Thus we have a 2-CD and 3-LP release with Cracker, Leftover Salmon, Drive-By Truckers, and others. “’Cause what the world needs now…”
  • Listen for some Holiday cheer, WNCW-style throughout December, beginning with these new singles.
  • These two friends present a full-length cover of Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham’s eponymous LP, Buckingham Nicks – a rare, cult record that has yet to ever be released on digital platforms or CD, or reissued on vinyl since its 1973 debut.
  • We’re excited to share this new release from one of our regional favorites with you. A frequent collaborator with various artists, including Rhiannon Giddens, Allison Russell, and Leyla McCalla in the Our Native Daughters quartet, she has Butch Walker (who produced this), S.G. Goodman, Billy Strings, Tim Armstrong, and Sadler Vaden on this. Amythyst is no doubt putting Johnson City, TN more prominently on the national map with this bold new album (particularly with the song “Empire of Love” that mentions her hometown.)
  • We’re sad there won’t be a Christmas Jam in Asheville this year, but Warren and others have put together quite an impressive fundraiser in NYC for Helene relief on November 24th. Check out his latest studio album, which he’s put a lot of heart and soul into. Case in point, the song “Real, Real Love”: “This was a song that was started but never finished by Gregg Allman. He had showed it to me and we had talked about it, and I completed it after he died. I finished it in a way that’s reflective of the way Gregg wrote and then invited Derek Trucks to be part of the recording process, which really took it to the desired next level. I wanted to write it as if Gregg were singing it. Even in the way we approach the song as a band, and in the way I approach it as a singer, I had his presence in mind the entire time.” And there’s the song that sounds like it was written just for Election Day, “Day of Reckoning”.
  • The Red-Headed Stranger is no stranger to releasing records: this is his 153rd! He’s got a bakers’ dozen songs on here: a couple originals, one by his son Micah who produced this, and covers from the likes of Neil Young, Warren Zevon, and Flaming Lips. Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan provided the lyrics that inspired the name of this album: “I’m the last leaf on the tree/the autumn took the rest/but they won’t take me/…I’ll be here through eternity/if they cut down this tree/I’ll show up in a song.”
