A 4-Week Journey into Traditional Mountain Ballads with Cary Fridley
Experience the heart of the mountains through song. Join acclaimed folk artist Cary Fridley at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts for a soulful, four-week exploration of Southern Appalachian musical heritage.
Part vocal masterclass and part history lesson, this workshop invites you to go beyond the notes. You’ll receive a curated repertoire of regional songs, complete with lyrics and chord sheets, while learning the stories that shaped them. Cary will provide expert guidance on adapting melodies to your unique vocal range and share professional tips and tricks for musicians looking to sing and play simultaneously.

Join us to learn about non-native invasive species that can threaten our native flora and fauna and see different management strategies in action. After exploring the techniques Grandfather Mountain Natural Resources staff use to promote native species in the park, we’ll head into the woods for hands-on experience removing invasive plants. Participants will learn non-native species identification, management practices that can be used at home and how some invasive “weeds” can have practical (even culinary) uses! Tickets for this event go on sale online on Grandfather Mountain’s website March 25 at 10 a.m. Advance registration required.

Want to learn to make jewelry? This beginner friendly metalsmithing course teaches the basic skills involved in making your own jewelry. Learn to use a variety of tools and equipment common in a jewelry studio.
This 3 Day Series will teach many techniques including sawing, filing, polishing, soldering, textures, and more!
Included is 4 Open Studio sessions (Wed/Thurs 11-4) valid for 2 months from class start.

Materials Fee: $55 -due at class

By the end of the series each students will have at least 2-3 finished jewelry pieces and likely many more!

Between trees, ferns, moss, and more, it’s impossible to document just how many shades of green can be found here. And the light – oh how the light brightens our historic square, highlighting so many intriguing architectural details. In other words, it’s an artist’s paradise. Explore Burnsville and Toe River Crafts invite you to pack your paints and your passion and head to Burnsville for our inaugural spring Plein-Air festival.

Tuesday, May 12
10 a.m – 2 p.m. – Stop by the registration area to stamp your canvas and learn moreabout potential painting settings. Your paintbrushes will be privy to special locations unique to participating artists.
5 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Join your fellow painters for cocktails, conversation and carefullycurated appetizers.
Wednesday, May 13
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Painting demos on the town square from some of our favorite local artists
