  • Nearly all the phony accounts were caught by artificial intelligence and a boost in human monitoring. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said breaking up the company would make purging abusive accounts harder.
  • Out this month is this new album from 3-time Grammy winner Ben Harper, no doubt one of our favorite musicians at WNCW. This one can be described as more subdued, introspective, even minimalist, compared to his previous albums. Accompanied by mostly just his acoustic guitar or piano, he considers these 11 new songs part of a family: each one a close relative to the next in terms of the stories they tell.
  • It can be a workout trying to keep up with Americana’s most prolific songwriter! But for those who’ve lost count this is his 37th, and it’s filled with 11 wonderful new originals, performed by the band he’s been out on tour with lately. That tour recently included MerleFest (his “Favorite Place”?) and SkunkFest in our area. It will be officially released on June 21st on Sky Crunch Records.
  • Introducing the first in an ambitious 4-part album series from Susan & Derek and co., each with an accompanying film. The series reimagines Layla and Majnun, the mythic Persian tale of star-crossed lovers through a modern-day lens: grappling with grief, fate, and romance as a way to process the emotional and isolating effects of the era. There will be one album released each month, with the culmination of all four released on September 9th.
  • In Zuckerberg's second day of testifying in the federal antitrust trial, he defended Meta's acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp. The U.S. government wants Meta to bust up the two companies.
  • The Minnesota singer/songwriter Siri Undlin performs under the name Humbird, and has this new album of 9 songs. She says avoiding apathy is “a central message of the album, and honestly I need to hear it as much as anyone. There is a time for resting and rejuvenating, but I think it’s important to be really honest with yourself about whether you are in that process, or whether you are making excuses because it’s hard. You have to be able to get into the squishy middle of things and really dig in.”
  • A native of South Carolina now living in Nashville, Kyshona (“Kuh-SHOW-nuh”) is a music therapist and community connector, in addition to being a talented musician with this moving new album. Her work focuses in part on uplifting the silenced and forgotten, and reconnecting those who feel marginalized and divided. This album chronicles her journey researching and writing about her family’s ancestry and stories, and includes co-writes with Aaron Lee Tasjan, Brittney Spencer, Caroline Spence, Jess Nolan, and her brother and grandfather.
  • On Amatssou, their ninth studio album, Tinariwen set out to explore the shared sensibilities of African desert blues and American country music as banjos, fiddles and pedal steel mix seamlessly with the Tuareg band’s trademark snaking guitar lines and hypnotic grooves. The lyrics call for unity and freedom; there are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. The album’s title Amatssou is Tamashek for ‘Beyond The Fear’. This was produced by Daniel Lanois, and was recorded in Algeria, France, Los Angeles and Toronto. Guest musicians include Fats Kaplin on fiddle and Wes Corbett on banjo.
  • Frontman Taylor Meier addresses the losses and other hardships he endured these past couple years on this new album. It was co-produced by Beatriz Artola, known for his work with Fleet Foxes, Adele and Sharon Van Etten and features additional production by Brad Cook, who is known for his work with Waxahatchee (who harmonizes with Nathaniel Rateliff on one of the songs.)
  • New Mexico is this singer/songwriter’s home, and these songs reflect her appreciation for family, home, and heart, in a time when those things have become essential to maintain sanity and decency. Robert Earl Keen, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her guitarist brother Tony Gilkyson are among the guests joining her on this sweet one.
