Climate hasn't been core to the GOP. These conservatives are trying to change that
Climate change hasn’t recently been a Republican priority. But some young conservatives are hoping to change the narrative within their party.
Wednesday 6/26: Humbird – Right On
The Minnesota singer/songwriter Siri Undlin performs under the name Humbird, and has this new album of 9 songs. She says avoiding apathy is “a central message of the album, and honestly I need to hear it as much as anyone. There is a time for resting and rejuvenating, but I think it’s important to be really honest with yourself about whether you are in that process, or whether you are making excuses because it’s hard. You have to be able to get into the squishy middle of things and really dig in.”
Monday 5/6: Kyshona – Legacy
A native of South Carolina now living in Nashville, Kyshona (“Kuh-SHOW-nuh”) is a music therapist and community connector, in addition to being a talented musician with this moving new album. Her work focuses in part on uplifting the silenced and forgotten, and reconnecting those who feel marginalized and divided. This album chronicles her journey researching and writing about her family’s ancestry and stories, and includes co-writes with Aaron Lee Tasjan, Brittney Spencer, Caroline Spence, Jess Nolan, and her brother and grandfather.
Monday 6/5: Tinariwen – Amatssou
On Amatssou, their ninth studio album, Tinariwen set out to explore the shared sensibilities of African desert blues and American country music as banjos, fiddles and pedal steel mix seamlessly with the Tuareg band’s trademark snaking guitar lines and hypnotic grooves. The lyrics call for unity and freedom; there are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. The album’s title Amatssou is Tamashek for ‘Beyond The Fear’. This was produced by Daniel Lanois, and was recorded in Algeria, France, Los Angeles and Toronto. Guest musicians include Fats Kaplin on fiddle and Wes Corbett on banjo.
