Mike Mattison and Trash Magic album release party - 1/17
Singer/Songwriter Mike Mattison is releasing his newest album, 'Turn A Midnight Corner' Jan. 16, with a party at the Asheville Music Hall Jan. 17. Mattison's best known as a member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Derek Trucks Band, who he's been with for 23 years. He's penned some of TTB's signature tunes including “Midnight In Harlem.” With the TTB and DTB, Mattison won two Grammys for Best Blues Album, eight Blues Music Awards from the Blues Music Foundation and four Canadian Maple Blues Awards.
This is Mattison's 3rd album of his own, plus 3 albums with the blues/roots band Scrapomatic he founded. His current band, Trash Magic, features veteran players familiar in Asheville. Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell on drums (Tedeschi-Trucks Band/ Scrapomatic); Dave Yoke on guitar (Dr. John/Susan Tedeschi Band/ Scrapomatic); Greg Spradlin on guitar (Los Lobos satellite member), and Wesley Flowers on bass and keyboards.
The album has an interesting backstory. Mattison was exploring the concept of a fictional 1930s Blues duo (Ted ‘n ‘Turk) who are “rediscovered” in the early 1970s as an idea for a novella he’s writing. In the story they’re brought together as older men to re-record their old 78 rpm sides. However, as Mattison notes, “the ‘rediscovery’ turns in to a bit of a media circus when rockstars come sniffing around, money muddies the waters, race stuff encroaches, resentments emerge and the whole thing falls to pieces.”
