Art, Heartbreak, and The Spiral Key
Art, Heartbreak, and The Spiral Key
What do Jennifer's Body, your sophomore year of high school, and Kelsey Day's The Spiral Key have in common? A homoerotic teen friendship made in hell!
It's an all too familiar story for many of us, the closer-than-close teen friendship with undercurrents of something...more. The slow burn grows too hot until something — maybe the homecoming dance, a group project, or an exclusive birthday party — sets off the explosion that burns it right down to the ground.
Join us for an evening of commiseration with author Kelsey Day, who will guide us through an art activity to excavate those suppressed memories of teen yearning and loss. Using collage, storytelling, and a brief reading from The Spiral Key as our guide we'll unearth our angstiest ghosts so we can finally put them to rest for good!
Kelsey Day is a young adult author and queer Appalachian poet. Their writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Orion Magazine, Freeman’s and more. The Spiral Key is their first novel for young readers. This gripping debut shows that while best friends know each other the best, ex–best friends know how to hurt each other the worst.
