A Glezele Tey: Klezmer concert & workshop Yiddish Song Workshop & Zingeray (sing-along)

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts (BMCA) is set to host a soulful weekend of Jewish diasporic music featuring the acclaimed trio A Glezele Tey. On Friday, April 24, at 7:30 PM, the ensemble will perform an intimate concert designed to evoke the "warmth of a living room." Based in Massachusetts and New York, the group—consisting of Ariel Shapiro on accordion, Rachel Leader on fiddle, and world-renowned percussionist Richie Barshay—blends traditional Klezmer with Yiddish folk songs. Their performance promises to be a deeply resonant experience, utilizing historical lineage to explore themes of grief, ritual, and the collective hope for a frayer velt, or a freer world.

The celebration of Ashkenazi culture continues on Saturday, April 25, with a Yiddish Song Workshop and "Zingeray" (sing-along) from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. This hands-on session invites community members of all ages and musical backgrounds to explore the "Yiddish Renaissance" through group singing and discussion. Led by the band members, the workshop requires no prior knowledge of the Yiddish language or professional singing experience. It serves as a rare opportunity for local residents to engage directly with the music’s history and participate in the joy of collective song, accompanied by live instrumentation.
