Monday Night April 27th at 8pm: REV. GARY DAVIS - Say No to the Devil

A huge inspiration to Jorma Kaukonen, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, and so many others, the Reverend Gary Davis was born in Laurens, SC on April 30th, 1896. Raised there and in Greenville, Davis was blind since childhood, taught himself guitar by around age 6, and commenced to preaching and playing on street corners here and in New York. He made a few recordings in the 1930's, but mostly not until he was rediscovered during the Folk Revival. Say No to the Devil was his second of two albums released in 1961 on the Prestige label, and it features his 12-string guitar and excellent harmonica playing on a few tunes. (It also has a better stereo mix than the previous one, according to some.) It's an hour of acoustic gospel blues with the premier name in the Piedmont Blues of our region, Monday night.
