Monday Night February 23rd at 8pm: NINA SIMONE - A Single Woman

There have been multiple events celebrating the legacy of Nina Simone in her hometown of Tryon this month, both for Black History Month and the 82nd anniversary of her birth February 21st. (There is a panel discussion of her life in Tryon and beyond this Thursday evening.) For your Spindale Cycle this week, we present the final album she made before her 2003 passing, 1993's A Single Woman. She had been in a long, self-imposed exile in France, and this album showed how she had aged, struggled through some of the challenges that had been plaguing her life, and gone in a different direction with the arrangements from the recordings of her "heyday". But it also showed some heartfelt autobiographical revelations of her tempestuous life, and the sweet, romantic side of her that was often overshadowed by her civil rights activism side. And, it showed that her unique phrasing, remarkable voice (if significantly lower), and class were still intact -- a triumphant return for many of her adoring fans. Celebrate one of our region's greatest artistic icons with us on Monday night.
