WNC Sierra Club (WENOCA) Presents Jack Igelman and the French Broad River's North Fork - Nov 1
Award-winning investigative reporter Jack Igelman recounts the historic threats to the French Broad and the ongoing effort to secure the Wild and Scenic River designation for the North Fork.
In 1966, the Tennessee Valley Authority proposed dams on 14 tributaries of the river but was thwarted by local activism. Another proposal likewise failed in the 1980s.
As a reporter with the Carolina Public Press, Igelman has followed the history and the controversy. He has watched the story unfold through a kaleidoscope of lenses held by the advocates on many sides. Igelman, who also teaches Economics at Warren-Wilson College, will unravel the complicated and complex story of the efforts to protect the river and obtain the designation that will keep it that way.
