Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend
Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend
This is the legend behind the story of the murder of Laura Foster. Her lover, Tom Dooley, was hanged for the crime but many questions remain about who really killed her. Was it really, Tom? Or was it his married lover, Anne Melton? Tom was represented by Gov. Zebulon Vance - a celebrity lawyer and past Governor of NC. Vance was such a well known figure, The New York Herald sent a reporter down to Elkville, where it all happened - and the story quickly spread like wildfire. It gripped a nation! Folks were captivated by this lover's triangle. Not to mention it took so many twists and turns they couldn't stop reading or talking about it - and the debates continue to this day over Tom's innocence or guilt! This summer "Dooley" audiences will see the story unfold onstage and they'll think they are watching a live episode of Dateline (from the 1860's)! And we cannot forget, The Kingston Trio won a Grammy for "Tom Dooley" in 1959 bringing other generations into the debate. Their song was based on old versions of the mountain ballads that sprang up after his hanging. This summer come join us as Benton Hall performs the story of Laura and Tom onstage live. It's a haunting tale. AND audience members can decide for themselves who really killed Laura Foster!
