Be they carefully cultivated blooms in neat rows or the dainty wildflowers growing in the meadows & secret parts of the forest, there is a simple and perfect beauty to any flowering plant. Being among fragrant blossoms & glossy foliage can be a respite from the stress of the outside world, in places where the greenness can reinvigorate one’s soul.

During the month of August, American Folk is celebrating the richness of summer flora at the height of their power. Beautiful botanicals and peaceful garden scenes abound in this gorgeous show featuring 8 of American Folk’s artists.

New to the gallery’s walls, artist Danette Sperry has a spiritual connection to nature and is often inspired by the beautiful garden she has cultivated around her home in Georgia. The birds and other creatures that visit her garden are often the focal points of her textural paintings.

For more than twenty years, John “Cornbread” Anderson has been painting the flora and fauna of his beloved Georgia. “Cornbread has a real tie to the land around him. He was raised on a farm and has spent his whole life tromping through the woods and fields there,” says Gallery Director Julia L. Mills. “It’s no wonder his art has always been focused on songbirds in a flowering tree or the wildflowers of the woods. That’s his world.”

Doug Frati is another artist with a strong connection to the natural world around him. A woodcarver who farms garlic on his family homestead in central Maine, Doug has refurbished the old barn on the property to serve as his carving studio and there creates vignettes of the plants and animals that share his homestead.

We have asked our featured artists to create with the botanical world at the forefront of their minds.
New works from Liz Sullivan, Kent Ambler, Cornbread, Lonnie & Twyla Money, Doug Frati, and Danette Sperry will be included.

An opening reception will be held on Friday August 5th from 5-7PM and a special pop-up flower shop will take place in the gallery on Saturday August 13th from 12-3PM.

American Folk has paired with Walker Town Farm of Black Mountain, NC for this special event. A family-owned cut flower farm in the North Fork Valley, Walker Town Farm will have beautiful seasonal bouquets for sale during the pop-up flower shop.
