An Evening with Peia - Tue, Jun 27
Peia Luzzi is an American born song collector, writer and multi instrumentalist based in the mountains of Appalachia. Like water from a deep well, she draws inspiration from her ancestral roots of Celtic and Old World European folk music. With a voice that dances nimbly from Child Ballads and 17th C. Irish laments, to Scottish Waulking Songs, and Bulgarian mountain calls, she has traveled & studied extensively over the past 12 years to reconnect with her own ancestral song tradition. With three studio albums to date and international touring since 2014, Peia has acquired a dedicated and diverse following around the globe, amassing over 20 million views on YouTube and selling out nearly every concert on her most recent European tour.
Joined by Peter Klaassen on double-bass, the live ensemble weaves soaring soprano vocals and hypnotic bass groves, together with her own instrumentation on charangon and harmonium to create a lush, organic soundscape. Their mesmerizing performances offer authentic re-imaginings of traditional folk music treasures, along with a stunning repertoire of Peia’s own original songs
Trained in Opera, Medieval chant and composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Peia set off to India, South America and the European continent in 2010 to deepen her exploration and study of traditional folk music. In 2012 Peia released her first solo album The Dance of Devotion, an intimate collection of poetic love songs. Her second release, Four Great Winds was self released in May 2013 and picked up by Sounds True for global release in 2015. Her music has taken her around the world and sparked collaborations with many world-class artists including: poet and Rumi scholar Coleman Barks, author, mythologist & storyteller Michael Meade, Sacred music artist Ajeet, Folk-Roots group Rising Appalachia,
Renaissance Lutist Ronn McFarlane, Iranian tar master Ali Ghamsari, Grammy Award Winning pianist Peter Kater, Flamenco Guitarist Estas Tonne and Irish singer Eílish Kennedy.
