Andy Goldsworthy, a sculptor best known for impermanent works in nature made of leaves, rocks and even ice, has created a permanent slate structure for the National Gallery of Art. To do so, he studied optics and physics to create a series of domes that should stand forever without any cement.

Congress Sets New Federal Debt Limit: $9 Trillion
Faced with a potential government shutdown, the Senate votes to raise the nation's debt limit for the fourth time in five years, to $9 trillion. That's about $30,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States. The debt now stands at more than $8.2 trillion.
