WNCW's Music Mix with Roland Dierauf

Weekdays 3pm to 6pm

Roland Dierauf wanders everyday through the cultural landscape that informs contemporary music.  Starting with the roots of early blues and country, he says hello to their many quirky offspring -- bluegrass, rock, alt country, jazz, funk, international rhythms, and all the endless hybrids.  It's music as big and varied and delightful as the people who make it.  Be a part of it, weekday afternoons on WNCW.

Ways to Connect

Blue Yonder Live Friday, July 6th Between 4 and 5pm

Jun 28, 2018

We've discovered a band from Charleston, WV that we think you might like. They take early country and folk music – from swing to honky-tonk, bluegrass to rockabillly, hymns to pop folk, and add a contemporary twist. They're in the area for a show at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall in West Asheville Friday evening. A Studio B double-header this Friday!

Fireside Collective Live Thursday, July 5th at 3pm

Jun 28, 2018
Fireside Collective
Sandlin Gaither

“Bluegrass, Newgrass, perhaps Progressive folk…” That's how Jesse Iaquinto (mandolin), Tommy Maher (dobro), Carson White (bass), Joe Cicero (guitar), and Alex Genova (banjo) describe their Asheville band that we are excited to welcome to Studio B on Thursday. They received an IBMA Momentum Award nomination last year, and momentum is certainly another descriptive term that applies to them this year.  They play the River Jam in Charlotte Thursday evening.

Adam McMillian

Voted the # 1 Rock N Roll band in WNC by Mountain Xpress Magazine 2015, 2016 and 2017, Andrew Scotchie & the River Rats have a new release, with its official release show at Highland Brewing on the 29th. And he's working on this September's Asheville Barnaroo festival, which he started in 2009 in his mom's backyard.

The Deer Live Thursday, June 7th at 3pm

Singer Grace Park and this band of Cosmic Americana, Psychotropic Folk, and Transcendental Texas Surf-Country from Austin have become a genuine favorite among the weekday music hosts here at WNCW this past year. We're eager to bring you a live session from them before they play Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard on Thursday, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte on Saturday.

Yellow Feather Live Wednesday, June 6th at 4pm

May 31, 2018
Yellow Feather
David Simchock

Old Fort, NC is on the musical map these days thanks to this group of Hunter Begley, Casey Kristofferson, Charlie Wills, and up to four other bandmates. They've been performing around the area a lot lately; their latest show is this Saturday at Asheville's Xpand Fest.

Samara Jade Live Tuesday, June 5th at 3pm

May 31, 2018

Known by some around Asheville, Barnardsville, and elsewhere as Searra Jade and Samara Gisondo, Samara has a new album released this Friday called Wave of Birdsong. A decade of immersion in the earthy traditions of homesteading and mountain music, and time spent at Berklee College of Music and Warren Wilson College, have yielded the sound that she calls "gypsy eco-philosopholk".

KRISTY COX Tuesday, May 29th at 4pm

May 24, 2018

This Australian born country & bluegrass artist moved to the US in 2013. Her latest release "Ricochet" debuted on 6 different Billboard charts including #1 for Bluegrass Album. She and her band stop by Studio B Tuesday afternoon for a visit with Roland before playing Isis Music Hall in West Asheville that evening.

The Appalucians Live Wednesday, May 23rd at 3pm

May 21, 2018

Black Mountain musicians Jay Brown, Aditi Sethi, Angie Heimann, & Cas Sochacki are members of the Lazybirds, Shaantavani, and the Blushin' Roulettes, but together form the folk/Americana quartet The Appalucians.  They have a new release called "Bright Hills", and in fact have a double CD release show at Isis in West Asheville with the Lazybirds on Saturday, June 9th.

Sanctum Sully Live Wednesday, May 16th at 3pm

May 11, 2018

Known for their strong bluegrass roots, Asheville's Sanctum Sully has reemerged as a more electric 6-piece band now, and their new blend of country/blues/jam-infused rock is on a new release that will be officially released at Isis in West Asheville on Friday night. They return to Studio B Wednesday at 3 with Roland.

North African bands that blend traditional Tourag music with modern rock, like Tinariwen, Toumast, and Bombino, are one of the most exciting sounds in world music these days. Our latest discovery is Imarhan, which translates to "The ones I care about." Join Joe Kendrick (and an interpreter) for a live session with them from The Mothlight in West Asheville on Monday afternoon around 4 or 5!

Toubab Krewe Live on Friday 4/20 around 4pm

Apr 19, 2018

It's been 8 long years since we had this much new material from Toubab Krewe, but their new release "Stylo" is worth the wait to fans of their unique blend of West African rhythm, West Coast surf, and other styles. They have two hometown album release shows Friday and Saturday at the Ellington Underground, and we hope to bring you a live interview/session from there on Friday afternoon!

(These CD's are available online or call 1-800-245-8870 during Fund Drive hours)

Caroline Rose Live Thursday, March 29th at 3pm

Mar 26, 2018
Caroline Rose
Lorne Thomson/Redferns

We're not likely to get much behind an album that was "as much inspired by Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as it was late '70s punk." But Caroline Rose's transformation from more of the folk-rock side to the alt-rock/dance-punk sound on Loner is pretty compelling. As were the rave reviews from her performance at SXSW. The result of the "new" Caroline Rose is a combination of fresh,  irreverent, and perhaps pretty well reflective of today's climate. Whether a true Loner or with her band, she'll play for us in Studio B on her way to The Mothlight in West Asheville.

Matt Walsh Friday, March 16th around 3pm

Mar 12, 2018

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Matt Walsh seems to already know a little about "Life After Rock & Roll" (the name of his latest release) -- his duo The Low Counts had a prolific four years of "Blue Collar Rock & Roll" before his drummer and friend Austin Hicks died a year ago this month. With influences spanning blues, soul, country, and more, The High Point/Statesville musician has shows in our area that include Asheville this Thursday and Black Mountain on Saturday.

CORB LUND Live Friday, March 2nd at 4pm

Feb 23, 2018

The Alberta singer/songwriter/rancher who brought us such 'NCW favorites as "The Truck Got Stuck", "Horse Doctor Come Quick", and "Bible On the Dash" is on a somewhat rare solo tour that takes him to West Asheville's newest venue on Friday night, Ambrose West.
