Two bands posing in studio at WNCW
Vicki Dameron

When he was 14, Kev Russell found his father's guitar under his bed, along with a sewing machine and a billy club. Lucky for us it was the guitar that captured his attention, because here at WNCW we have totally dug the records he made with the Gourds, and his latest band Shinyribs, too. Shinyribs played live in Studio B last June, and we'll listen to that session. PLUS, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Aaron Neville lead guitarist Jamie McLean, who also has a band of his own.

We're excited to share our latest On The Way Up Podcast with you this week! It's hosted by Lauren Wasmund, our WNCW summer intern. She'll take us on a true Americana musical journey with songs from artists like the Fruit Bats from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, to the funkalicious sounds of Kev "Shinyribs" Russell from Austin Texas, followed by a DJ For The Day Segment featuring Ashevillian Julian Pinelli, a local North Carolina master fiddler and free style violinist.

Instruments at MerleFest 2016
Joe Kendrick

Recap by Joe Kendrick -- Wilkesboro is only some 90 miles away from where I live, but going there for MerleFest always seems to transport me across much more than that short space and time. Winding my way through the rolling hills up highway 18 in late April has a uniquely soothing effect, and shifts my thoughts through the gears of choruses and solos, and faces and conversations of all the festivals I’ve attended.
