The first time Balsam Range won the International Bluegrass Music Association award for Entertainer Of The Year back in 2014, bassist Tim Surrett recalled how someone came up to the band and asked, “How's it feel to be the best bluegrass band in the world?” It was a question they were not quite ready for, as Tim went on to say, “all of us just started laughing.

The 2019-20 season marks the 21st season for The Foundation Performing Arts Center, located at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC.  Foundation Executive Director  Russell Wicker was guest on this edition of The Friday Feature to cover the season's guests appearing from September through April.  Learn about dates for such musical acts as The Drifters and Balsam Range and a dedication to Sir Paul with The McCartney Years.  This interview first aired August 23, 2019.

The mandolinist for Balsam Range released a wonderful solo release this year called "Fret a Spell" (get it?), and he stops by for a visit with Jasmin Melton before Balsam Range plays the Cherry Bounce Festival in Forest City, NC  Friday night. Darren's own band, which draws from a variety of styles, plays Bearwaters Brewing in Canton, NC on Saturday, as well as the Folkmoot Center in Waynesville, NC on Sunday the 23rd.

This week we have a great selection of featured new releases.  Artists we are playing a bit more frequently include Balsam Range, Charles Bradley, Charley Crockett, Donna the Buffalo, Nikki Hill, Greg Humphreys Electric Trio, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, and Becky Warren. 

Goin' Across The Mountain Host Joe Greene welcomes members of Carolina Blue Saturday, December 15th in the One O'clock hour to talk about, and premiere, songs from the bluegrass band's new album, "I Hear Bluegrass Calling Me." The Smoky Mountain News is presenting "Bluegrass Boogie" - just one of numerous events that will make up this year's Balsam Range - Art of Music Festival in Waynesville, the week after Thanksgiving.  Bluegrass Boogie includes live music by Ol' Dirty Bathtub and Darren Nicholson.  Reporter Garrett Woodward from the SM News is guest on this Friday Feature to provide all the details.
