German Village

Did you know that:

  • Hot Springs was the site of a World War I internment camp for German prisoners of war and the detainees built a Bavarian village inside the compound?
  • Lay's Potato Chips were named for snack food entrepreneur Herman Lay, a native of Charlotte?
  • The earliest known European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States was built by Spanish explorers near Morganton in the mid-1500s?
  • A dramatic event that garnered nationwide attention in the late-1950s movement to desegregate public schools took place at Old Fort School in McDowell County?

Western North Carolina historical tidbits such as these will be featured on WNCW each Tuesday and Wednesday morning in a new segment called “History Dibs and Dabs”. The segment is the result of a partnership between WNCW and Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort and is produced in association with the NC Department of Cultural Resources. Historians from Mountain Gateway Museum will be scripting the segments and presenting them on air.
“History Dibs and Dabs” debuts on WNCW Tuesday, June 16th and will air Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8:49 am during Morning Edition.
